Severe Thunderstorm Watch Area: Waikato,Waitomo,Taumarunui,Bay of Plenty,Rotorua,Taupo,Taranaki,Taihape Forecast: Showers and heavy showers are expected about the central North Island Friday afternoon and evening. In Waikato, Waitomo Taumarunui, northern Taranaki, inland Bay of Plenty, inland Rotorua, Taupo and northern Taihape, there is an associated moderate risk of thunderstorms. These thunderstorms are expected to produce heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25 mm/h, and small hail. Additionally, there is also a moderate risk that some of these thunderstorms could become SEVERE, producing LOCALISED DOWNPOURS of 25 to 40 mm/h. Note, localised downpours could also occur without thunderstorms. Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips. Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain. Impact: Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
