Special Weather Statement issued November 15 at 1:03PM AKST by NWS Fairbanks AK A storm system is expected to enter the Chukchi Sea early next week. This will cause strong winds with gusts between 50 and 60 mph for the Northern Seward Peninsula and Northern Kotzebue Sound. These winds combined with the expected snowfall could result in near blizzard conditions at times. In addition, localized ice shoves are a possibility with the new ice starting to form along the Northern Kotzebue Sound. Winter Storm Watch issued November 16 at 1:45AM AKST until November 20 at 3:00PM AKST by NWS Fairbanks AK * WHAT...Blizzard conditions possible. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph. * WHERE...Kivalina and Red Dog Dock, Baldwin Peninsula, Shishmaref and Bering Strait Coast. * WHEN...From late Monday night through Wednesday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The cold wind chills as low as 25 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. A Winter Storm Watch for blizzard conditions means there is a potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibilities. This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very difficult.
