Special Weather Statement issued January 2 at 4:04AM AKST by NWS Anchorage AK An arctic air mass is expected to further drive into the Copper River Basin, with morning temperatures dropping as low as 40 below zero in lower elevations. Temperatures will remain cold today and map further drop Friday night as the air mass remains over the northern and central Basin. Locations closer to Mentasta Lake and Slana are expected to have a northeast wind develop this evening and through Friday night which will keep ambient temperature near 20 to 25 below zero, but drop wind chill values as low as 40 below to 50 below zero for tonight and Friday night in these areas.

Cold Weather Advisory issued January 2 at 12:31PM AKST until January 4 at 12:00PM AKST by NWS Anchorage AK * WHAT...Very cold temperatures as low as 50 below. * WHERE...Eastern Copper River Basin, including the Tok Cutoff and Richardson Edgerton Highways. * WHEN...Until noon AKST Saturday. * IMPACTS...Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Temperatures will remain cold through Saturday morning across the eastern half of the Copper River Basin. Locations along the Richardson and Edgerton Highways will continue to see temperatures hover near 40 below zero. Locations closer to Mentasta Lake and Slana are expected to have a northeast wind develop this evening and continue into Saturday which will keep ambient temperatures near 20 to 25 below zero, but drop wind chill values as low as 50 below zero. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Use caution when travelling.
