Now is a good time to ensure you have warm outdoor clothing capable of keeping you warm during extreme cold and preventing frostbite and/or hypothermia. Multiple layers of clothing including outdoor jackets and pants are the best way to stay warm during extreme cold, helping to prevent frostbite and/or hypothermia. These items include: hat, gloves, winter jacket, face mask, thicker socks, and cold weather footwear. Hand and foot warmers are also recommended. Backcountry recreation is not advised. Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside. Those planning to venture outdoors should use common sense and dress warmly, making sure exposed skin is properly covered to prevent frostbite and/or hypothermia. Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Avoid being outdoors in wet conditions which can increase the risk of the body cooling down and becoming hypothermic.
